UNEMPLOYMENT.
GRADING OF WORKERS
SUGGESTED CONFERENCE.
COMMERCE CHAMBER'S VIEW.
The Unemployment Board is to give careful consideration to the suggestion of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce that the unemployed be graded into various sections, according to a letter received by the council of the chamber from the board this morning. The president of the chamber, Mr. Harvey Tvrner, explained that the chamber's suggestion had been forwarded after lengthy deliberation among members of the special unemployment committee of the council, which had been in existence for some time. Later in the mooting It was reported that the co- -cil's executive had considered a proposal from the New Zealand Farmers' Union (Auckland Province) that a conference on unemployment should be held. The executive recommended that such a conference, if called, should be convened by the Mayor; that in view of the difficulties attending the expression of the divergent opinions of different bodies represented it was doubtful whether such a meeting would arrive at definite practical conclusions; and that the chamber be prepared to send a representative if such a mooting were called. "I think that is about as far as we can go," commented Mr. Turner. Mr. G. J. Browne suggested that the second clause in the proposed reply should be eliminated. The chamber should not say that the conference would be of no good and then agree to send a representative to it. Mr. A. M. Seaman pointed out that the Farmers' Union had specially asked for an expression of opinion as to the desirability of such a conference. The recommendations of the executive were adopted.
