CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

GOVERNMENT BORROWING.

Members of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce stood in silence this mornjng as a mark of respect to the late • Sir Alfred Bankart, a former president of the chamber. Concerning the Finance Act provisions for Government borrowing, it was decided that the attention of the Minister of Finance should be specifically drawn to the undesirability of having the Government's borrowing powers fixed at a proportion of the estimated expenditure rather than the estimated revenue. The president, Mr. Harvey Turner, and the other Auckland delegates reported on the conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce held in the South last week. It was mentioned that the next annual conference would be held in Christchurch.
