MUNICIPAL POLLS.
Labour Gains 172 Seats in British Elections.

(Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, November 1. Municipal elections are being held in more than 300 cities and boroughs in England and Wales to replace onethird of the councils. The first hundred results were as follows;- — Gains. Losses. Labour 172 5 Conservatives .... <> 100 Liberals f> 31 Independent;* 10 51 Labour so far, however, has only secured control in Barnsley, Wallseiid, Swansea and Oldham. There were considerable gains of seats in Burnley, Derby, Bolton, Sunderland, Sal ford and Bootle. Those defeated in Manchester include Lady Simon and Lord Stanley. .
