CUSTOMS REVENUE.
BEST FOR THREE YEARS.
PORT'S OCTOBER FIGURES,
It is more than three years since the total of Customs revenue in any month was greater than it was last month. For the ten months gone of this year the total exceeds last year's corresponding figures by £190,607. The figures for October were £211,373, a large increase on October last year. Every month except June this year showed an increase over last year. In the ten months of this year the Customs duties collected total £1,816,738- Motor spirit and tyre duties have yielded £403,864 this year, an increase of £9132. Motor spirit duty is computed at the old rate of Cd a gallon for the purposes of comparison, the receipts from the new duties being included in the Customs duties total. Excise on beer for the ten months amounts to £103,569, an increase of £5011. The sales tax since its institution in March has produced £317,497. The following is a comparative table of all duties for-October:— 1933. 1932. OTHER DOMINION PORTS. INCREASES EST TWO CENTRES. Returns from Wellington register an increase in Customs revenue for October to tho extent of over £20,000. An increase is also reported from Christchurch, but in Dunedin slight decreases have occurred. Press Association reports are as follow: — Wellington. —Substantial increases are shown in the totals of net Customs duties collected at the port of Wellington in October, compared with October, 1932, while tho revenue from the sales tax was by far the largest for any one month eince tho tax came into force last February. The returns are as follows, those for Octobcr last year being given in parentheses:—Customs revenue, £190,100 ( £109,710); motor spirit, £34,428 at Od a gallon, and £22,900 at 4d a gallon ( £35,059, £11, GOO); tyre tax, £1139 ( £1497); beer excise duty, £5830 (£5201); sales tax, £53,953, compared with £49,174 last month. The amounts collected in the last 10 months, with those of tho same period of 1932 in parentheses, are as follows: —Customs revenue, £1,595,861 (£1,714,259); motor spirit, £504,095 ( £480,312); tyre tax, £13,954 (£15,485); beer excise duty, £43,073 (£49,024).
Christchureh.—Customs revenue in Christcliurch again showed an increase during October. Following aro tho comparative figures:—Net Customs, October, 1933, £61,979; October, 1932, £58,802; beer duty, £8845 ( £0663); motor spirit tax, £14,975 ( £13,613); tyre duty, £825 ( £702); sales tax, £20,231. For the 10 months of the calendar year the figures are as follows:—Customs, 1933, £6!X>,893; 1932, £004,300; beer duty, £66,748 ( £65,735); motor spirit tax, £107,517 (£100,427); tyre duty, £6717 ( £7198); sales tax, £146,538. Dunedin.—Tho Dunedin Customs figures for the month ended to-day were as follows, tho corresponding figures for October last year 'being shown in parentheses: —Customs revenue, £45,395 (£47,671); beer duty, £24,420 (£24,792); petrol tax, £13,200 ( £13,754); tyre tax, £313 (£777). The sales tax amounted to £16,462.
