POLYDORA'S PROGRESS.

(By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Inquiries during the last few days show that many trainers have not yet completed riding engagements for the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting. The supply of capable lightweight horsemen is not equal to the demand that exists for their services. Don Jose is suffering from an injury to his off fore leg. While schooling on Tuesday he over-reached and cut himself. He showed improvement to-day, but as this was his second mishap lately of the same nature he may not be started in Saturday's hurdle race. Great Star -is getting over the injuries he received when galloped on at Trentham- Present intentions are to start him in the Stewards' Handicap, but he will be backward. L. G. Morris will ride Red Manfred in the Derby on Monday, while T. Green will have the mount on Epigram in the same race. Polydora has made good progress during the last couple of days, and her injured leg shows no evidence of the trouble now. The mare has been idle since Monday, however, and the position might have been very different had she been working. Possibly she could be got ready to race in the Metropolitan Handicap on the final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, but H. Nurse does not favour that programme. It is more likely that she will have a short rest before being got ready for the Auckland summer meeting. The lightweight jockey L. J. Ellis had to go into hospital at Wellington owing to a sudden attack of illness during the recent race meeting at Trentham- He has made a good recovery, and arrived back from the north this morning. Silver Ring, who has been under treatment for a' few weeks, has* resumed work. In the meantime he is being kept to light tasks, but R. W. King will soon have him doing fast work.
