FINAL GALLOPS.
WORK AT ELLERSLIE.
CARFEX AND RED SUN.
VIEW HALLOO ALSO IMPRESSES.
Beautiful weather prevailed for the final gallops at Elierslie this morning. The course proper, with the poles 30ft out, was open for fast work, and it was fully availed of. The going was excellent, and some interesting trials were provided. Amongst the best efforts were those of View Halloo, C'arfex, Red Sun, Porotiti, Chief Cook, Kiltowyn, Wlienuakura and Mother Superior. Other tracks in use were the sand, tan, two-year-old and Xo. 3 grass. Several horses were schooled over hurdles and steeplechase fencesThe Course Proper. Spiral and Hawthorn opened proceedings. They were sent six furlongs, running the first three in 39 4-os, and the full distance in 1.20. Hawthorn was eased up in the straight, and Spiral was a number of lengths in front at the finish. The Mitchelson Cup candidates Carfex and Red Sun, after trotting once round on the sand, were pulled on to the course proper, and, with Senegal, jumped away at the mile post. The lastnamed was in front for over half ttie journey, where Carfex and Red Sun moved up, Carfex eventually finishing over a length ahead of Red Sun, with Senegal several lengths away. The first four furlongs were run in 51 l-os, and the full distance in 1.45 3-5. It was a good gallop, with Carfex going particularly well at the finish, though Red Sun, who was on the outside, also did his work impressively. The two-year-old Whenuakura, after running his first couple of furlongs in 24 3-ss, reeled off half a mile in 50 3-ss. He went from the mile to the naif-mile post, and did his work attractively. Glenromney and Courthaven were not doing their best to complete six furlongs in 1-23 4-5. Grand Tonic pleased better than Bright Flower after traversing half a mile in 52 l-ss.
Karangapai was sent six furlongs alone, covering the distance in 1.20 1-5. Zane Grey and Xeil were companions over a round, which occupied 2.16 4-5, the last seven furlongs taking 1.41 1-5. Pomp jumped away at the five-furlong post, running the first two in 255, and completing his task in 1.5 3-5. He was running on solidly at the finish and is in great heart. Psychologist ran his first three furlongs in 39 l-ss, and got to the eud of six in 1.19 4-5. He was blowing a bit at the finish. View Halloo, Lord Yal and All Humbug "were associated over a mile. The first half took 52 l-se, and the full distance occupied 1.46 1-3. View Halloo was in front at the end, doing his work very impressively. Lord Val was about two lengths away, a length in front of All Humbug. The last-named got his tongue over the bit, which would probably account for his failure to make a better showing. Gay Broney and Wee Pat ran a mile in 1.49 4-5. They were joined by My Moneypast the six-furlong post, and he was in front at the end. Gay Broney worked nicely and could have done better. Brown Lap accounted for Royal Appellant and Miss Rewa at the end of five furlongs which occupied 1.6 3-5, Brown Lap did his work nicely. Over a similar distance Alpinus was always doing better than Mountain Breeze, beating her by several lengths in 1.5 3-5. Porotiti had Chief Cook as a companion over six furlongs, the first three taking 39 l-ss, and the full distance 1.19. They were together at the finish, though Porotiti, on the outside, appeared to be doing the better of the pair. Chief Cook also did a solid trial. The two-year-old Mother Superior was sprinted half a mile, going from the mile to the fourfurlong post.. She ran the first two in 24 3-ss, and completed her task in 50 4-ss. Supreme Ruler and Chief Emerald ran half a mile in 535, doing their work in good style.
After Breakfast. Kiltowyn gave Jewelled Girdle several lengths' break at the six-furlong post, and was a shade in front at the finish in 1.18 3-5, Jewelled Girdle's time being 1.19. Kiltowyn's .performance • was a good' one, as he was conceding the other horse, who also went well, a lot of weight. However, the track was a bit faster after the interval. Morehu ran her first two furlongs in 25 2-5s and completed five furlongs in 1.5 1-5. She did her work very freely. The Guineas candidate King Musk worked easily over a mile, running the distance in 1.52 1-5. Gay Rose completed half a mile in 52 3-ss. She could have improved on this time. Baroscope worked over a round, but did not have much pace on till the last five furlongs, which he covered in 1.5 2-5. Barograph assisted him over the last three furlongs, which were traversed in 38 3-ss. Baroscope worked exceptionally well, and it is some time since he was in the condition he now is. The jumper Kairuri did strong work over a round and three furlongs, which he completed in 2.58 1-5. He ran the last, round in 2.16 4-5, and the final half mile in 575. Without doing his best at any stage, United strode over five furlongs in 1.8 1-5. This hack also bears an improved appearance. Versant finished up his work by running half a mile in 53 l-os, and Echo Song pleased better than Royal Survey while running a similar distance in 51 4-sfe. The two-year-olds, Red Flame, Seven Seas, and Sporting Song, ran home in that order from the three-furlong post in 38s. Red Flame, who has done well recently, put plenty of dash into her work. The Jumpers. Coachman (Jarvis) and Mahkill (Craddock) were companions over four hurdles, and got through their task safely. Mahkills effort, for a beginner, was encouraging. Billy Boy (Burgess) was sent over the same fences. He did not jump with his usual dash, probably due to the fact that he has not been schooled for some time. Count Lendroft (11. Jennings) went away near the mile post and jumped the two fences on the hill and the stonewall at the foot, being then pulled on to the course proper. He gave a first-class display. Riotous (C. Thomson), Patutahi (Burgess), and Huawai (I. Tucker) were associated in a round of the steeplechase course. They commenced at the sod wall; and after jumping the fences on the fiat continued up the hill, Patutahi being pulled off at the top of the straight, the other pair again going over the fences on the flat. Riotous, who was having his first experience over the EHerslie country, gave a fine exhibition, and Patutahi also fenced satisfactorily. Huawai, who was some distance back at the finish, hit the last obstacle, "the stonewall, and dislodged his rider. Scratching. Gold 7 Trail was scratched for the Mitc-hekon Cup at 9 a.m. to-day. Latest Arrivals. The arrivals this morning were Sea Fox and Davistock in charge of J. Butler, and Aga Khan and Diagano in charge of C. Jackson.
