SWIMMING.
AUCKLAND CENTRE'S YEAR,
TWO MOKE CLUBS AFFILIATE!
■- The annual report of the Auckland Centre of tlip New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, to be presented to-night, states ■ that : the past season was successful in every respect, despite the trying financial difficulties that have had to be faced. Although in some instances financial loss was sustained on carnivals held by the clubs, the swimming attained a very high standard, all raeos heing keenly contested. The prospocts for the coming season look very bright, and with the careful attention and co-operation of all delegates another successful season will he assured. During the season twelve clubs affiliatnd. this being two more than tlie previous season. The new ones were Birkenhead-Northcote Club and Otahuhu Club. Two carnivals, senior and junior-intermediate, were held at the Tepid Baths previous to tlie departure of representatives to the New Zealand championships. Bolli proved to be a great success financially and competitively. Owing to the shortage of funds it was at one stage thought impracticable to send teams away to compete in the national championships. This difficulty was, however. overcome by the fine sporting action of the affiliated clubs in donating a sufficient amount to enable' Auckland to be represented. Auckland swimmers nsrain achieved a wonderful success at the senior and junior New Zealand championships, retaining the Yaldlmrst and War Memorial Shields by a good margin. The senior championships were held at Napier, the Yaldlmrst Shield being won with (il points, the junior and intermediate championships at Invereargill, where Auckland was again successful by winning the War Memorial Shield with 7 points. The past season was the fourth one in which the control of water polo lias been under the jurisdiction of tlie Auckland Water Polo Control Board, all clubs this season fielding more teams and taking a far greater interest 111 the game than in the past. Three competitions were decided during the season, resulting in a win for Ponsonby Club in both senior grades, Devonport capturing the junior grade. Unfortunately, owing to lack of funds, Auckland was unable to field its best team at the New Zealand championship, but under the circumstances did exceptionally well in being runners-up to Canterbury.
