SCHOOL STAFFS.

TEMPORARY SHORTAGES

TEACHERS' EXAMINATIONS.

(By Telegraph.—-Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The senior inspector c»f schools in each education district -is authorised to provide relieving teachers if he is satisfied that there are so many teachers absent from a school that that school cannot otherwise he conducted with reasonable efficiency. This information was given in the House yesterday by the Prime Minister in Teply to Mr. R. A. Wright (Coalition Reforan, Wellington Suburbs). ; Mr. Wright asked if the Minister was aware that a number of primary school teachers would bo absent from the schools while attending University examinations in November. As that was a critical month for the children, owino- to their annual exHminations beint? in progress, he asked ii the Minister 0 would appoint as temporary substitutes some of the unemployed school teachers. After quoting the regulation, which provides that no relieving teacher can be appointed for fewer than four weeks if, in the opinion of the chief inspector, the remaining staff can conduct the school in a satisfactory maimer, tlio Prime Minister said that absence due to examination requirements was not essentially . different from absence due to ill-health. When teachers were absent for only a day or two, the headmaster could usually make arrangements for carrying on temporarily without extra assistance. If, however, so many of the staff were absent at one time, if only for a few days, then the senior inspector could approve of relief being given, provided he was satisfied tlhat the school could not otherwise be conducted with reasonable efficiency.
