HANDICAPPER APPOINTED.
WYNDHAM RACING CLUB. INVERCARGILL, Friday. Mr. C. E. Haesall, of Timaru, lias been appointed handicapper for the Wyndhum Racing Club.
LESS THAN £10,000.
The settling over the Epsom HandicapMetropolitan double in Sydney was one of tlie quietest for years. Had Kogilla or Topical scored in the Metropolitan there may have been some jubilation, but Eegal Son's victory was a bookmakers' triumph in every way lor the double books. An estimate was tliat less than ii 10,000 was paid out# about the double. Kegal Son's success straight out was quite another matter, but his prominent Epsom showing forewarned the layers too. lie was one of the best backed horses in the Metropolitan. So little was thought of his chance that as late as the previous Friday, in a set £500 to one double book, the ChathamRegal Son combination was not laid. Chatham also could have been a much worse horse for bookmakers. Prior to his success at Warwick Farm lie was not considered in the Epsom Handicap, but public form was as significant to layers as to backers, and the latter had to accept a much reduced price after his wcight-for-age win.
