"DISAPPOINTED."
ANTI-RAGWORT MEASURES.
FARMERS WANT SUBSIDY.
(From Our Own Correspondent )
TE KUITI, Friday.
At the monthly meeting of the VVaitomo County Council to-day some strong comment followed the attendance of a deputation on the question of ragwort destr/ition. The chairman, Mr. W.. A. Leo, e»pressed the absolute disappointment of the council at the proposals of the Government in the grant for . supply of sodium chlorate. In face of the fact that the Minister, 011 a recent visit to Te Kuiti, had been waited on by the Waitomo and Otorohanga Councils, to whom he gave a promise that the Government would probably subsidise the commodity in order that it might be sold at 3d per lb, the suggested loan at 4J per cent, with a 20 per cent sinking fund, was altogether inadequate. He considered it would be' quite wrong for the council to purchase sodium chlorate on the terms indicated. The ratepayers would now be compelled to make their own arrangements, in regard to sodium, and not delay in their efforts to combat ragwort. There were many infested properties whose owners had not the means to combat the menace. "I am deeply disappointed about the matter," Mr. Lee concluded.
