INSTEAD OF GALLOWS.
VIVISECTION OF CRIMINALS. LONDON, October 7. Deat.li on the gallows or service to humanity on the operating table? Dr. Mcßride, the noted medical authority, has written a book, "Doctors and Patients," in which he declares that criminals should not be hanged or flogged, but should be used for medical and surgical experiments. "Violent criminals have sinned against their fellows, and it is logical that they should be asked to make restitution by useful service," he says. "Nothing could be mere beneficial tliah that their living bodies should be used as experiments. The present law submits them to objectless cruelty; the other course might, with less pain, make them agents ministering health and happiness to the community they had wronged. Many new remedies would thus be more rapidly standardised."
