HEAVY TAXATION.
LIQUORS AND TOBACCO
Tlie breweries are feeling the pinch of hard times an<l heavy taxation, ami at the annual meetings of different brewery companies, loud complaints against tlie taxation by way of beer duty have been voiced. However (remarks the "Mercantile Gazette"), they are not the only ones so Handicapped, nor are they the worst off. The duty on a 1 G bottle of beer is 3d. or 17 per cent, the duty on a. 13/ 1,-i 14/ bottle of whisky is 5/6 or 40 per rent., the duty on a packet of cigarettes at "d to f>d is 3d to 4%. or, say, 45 per ceiit. Taking the whole-ale side of the oupstion, imported alcoholic liquors are taxed at an average of 163 per cent of the import value, tobacco and cigarettes at 150 nor cent, while local beer appears to be about .90 ner cent of the value apart from I'uty. However, it would appear that the limit of taxation has been'reached on ."II these lines. as consumption hns suffered severely owing to the increased cost, •ind !io other commodities are taxed at nnjrthinß approaching these rates, except "erhaps motor spirits, which have been | Hcreaeed considerably of late. Sales tax. I surtax, income tax, etc., Lave to be added Lo the above taxations.
