WINTER BOWLING.

PROGRESS OF TOURNAMENTS.

CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE.

CLUB OPENINGS NEXT SATURDAY

(By TRUNDLER.)

An ideal spring day favoured all sports last Saturday, and the bowling greens were well attended. Mount Eden reached the final in the most successful winter tournament ever conducted by the club. 1 layed in four sections of eight, two days enabled every rink to meet every other rink in their section. The section winners were W. A. Lancaster (Carlton) and R. J. Allely (Mount Albert), the former winning when they met in the semi-final, while R. C. Caddy (Grey Lynn) defeated F. M. Ritchie (Carlton)' in the other semi-final. The final between Lancaster and Caddy will be j)layed next Saturday.

Epsom also found the section winners, and Kelly (Epsom) has to meet Hills (Carlton) in one semi-final, while Burton (Epsom) will meet Jackson (Hillsboro'j in the other.

The section winners at Balmoral are Whittle (Grey Lynn) and Norgrove (Balmoral), the latter after a tie with Newton (Balmoral). - The final is fixed for next Saturday.

The largest gathering last Saturday was at Onehunga, where representatives of five chambers of commerce met for a friendly game. The original intention was that the metropolitan body was to play against all the others, but the numbers did not fit in well enough, even though about a dozen players present were eligible to play for either side. However, the selectors hit on the happy expedient of commandeering most of these for Onehunga, and then putting the local chamber and club against all the visitors. They were welcomed by the club president, Mr. 15. J. Gatland, and the president of the local chamber of commerce, Mr. I. J. Sutherland, the latter expressing his pleasure at the presence of so many of the leading bowlers of the city among the chamber of commerce members. They were particularly pleased to see the three Auckland past presidents of the New Zealand Bowling Association, Messrs. M. M. McCallum, W. Coltman and «1. Pascoe, the president of the Auckland Centre, Mr. 11. Sheath, the vice-president, Mr. F. A. Hosking, and the treasurer, Mr. A. 11. Yeoman. . At. tlie other extreme, he welcomed the latest recruits, four or five members of the local chamber, who had never handled a bowl before, adding, amidst laughter, "but it's a poor rink that can't carry one passenger, so I hope they will get a nice game." Mr. McCallum, a past president of the Auckland Chamber 'of Commerce, acknowledged the welcome and congratulated the local chamber on organising such a successful function. As a matter of fact, it was a very representative gathering in every way. including players from four banks, besides other large financial, commercial and industrial houses. The company also included Mr. T. McNab, Mayor of MountEden. Mr. W; J. Nicholson, chairman of the Papatoetoe Town Board, Mr. 11. M. Widsburv, president of the 1 apatoetoe Chamber of Commerce, and Messrs. H. E. Mcljntee. and F. J. Lound. occupying the corresponding positions at Papakura. Hie Onehunga Chamber of Commerce members plaving included the president, All. Sutherland, the vice-president, Mr. A. O. Houldsworth, the secretary. Mr. 1. C. Soar, three past .presidents, Messrs. 1:1. J. Davies, J. E. Green and D. H. Kirk Jones, and everv member of the council, besides two members of the Onehunga Borough Council, Mr. S. Yella, deputy-Mayor, and Mr. A: C. Tonkin.uv — ... Devonport retained the Edwin Stars in an interesting and fluctuating match, scoiing on 11 of the 21 heads, just as they did v flre previous week at Reinueia. J. S. Locklev, H. R: Martinson, ]< Snoad, ,T. R. Lundon (Devonport) 23, v. B. Smith, L Dick, W. McKinstne, -J. A. Robertson (Waitemataj 17. The challengers started off well, and reached 13 to 0 on the twelfth head, but the unlucky number was their undoing, for Devonport evened the score with a 5 and a 2, and Waitemata scored oil only two more heack. A feature of the game was the success ot Luiulon's "up-shots." a forcing pohcj which admirably suited the reconstructed green. The next challenger is !->■ C. i Eraser (Mount Eden), and this will be the last game of the season regard ess oi I which side wins, as both clubs vwll open i their summer season on the 11th. _ The Denison Pins gave another win, the eighth, to Ponsonby. by a substantial margin against Rawhiti, and the next on the list are J. Gardiner (Otahuhu) and R J. Allelv (Mount Albert) That is as far as the competition will continue this year, to be resumed about next May. or as soon as the holders and the next challengers are free from their summei engagements. , , , The Jordan Pins soon changed hands, the new holders failing to repeat their successful run of wins which they enjoyed earlier in the season. .1 . I llkington, H. Johnson, S. Moore, A. Moon (le Papapa) challengers. 24, v. R P. >-orris Warren G. Roberts. R. Dawson (St. Helier s) holders, 18. This is the last competition of the year for these trophies, as the le Papapa summer season opens next Saturday. It is a coincidence that the same chili had the pleasure of holding the trophies last summer, and this is a' convenient time to offer the reminder that the members of the rink are entitled to wear them on all important occasions during the summer. , . , . St Helier's were unfortunate in losing, for 'if they had won they could have plaved on their own green for the tirst time next Saturday, as the green has been closed for treatment during the winter and play is now to be resumed. There wilt be nothing of an official nature, as the club will again bold the more ceremonial function later on. and November 4 has been fixed for the "At Home. Papatoetoe will officially open the season on Saturday, and special interest will attach to the "ceremony this year as it is the twentv-first anniversary of the cubs foundation. Other clubs who have notified their opening for next Satin dnj are Henderson. Pukekohe. Rocky JSook. Te Papapa and Waitemata. A reminder is given that all the clubs opening after next Saturday will have the benefit_ of the extra half hour of daylight saving, which comes into force next Saturday night. :
