ENGINE SAVED.

WRECKING ATTEMPT.

TE KUITI RAILWAY YARDS.

JIGGER FOUND ACROSS RAILS.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

TE KUITI, this dar,

An attempt was made to wreck rolling stock in the Te Kuiti railway yards early yesterday morning. While shunting at 3 a.m. a driver noticed the points on a side line half-cocked.

Examination showed that they had been forced apart by two large stones. Further along the line a heavy jigger had been placed across the rails.

But for the vigilance of the shunting staff the engine would doubtless have been derailed. Later, detonators which had been taken from a jigger exploded when the engine went over them.

The interference appeared, to be the work of more than one man, as the jigger was too cumbersome for a single man to lift. The police have the matter in hand.
