"I venture to hope that considering the enormous value of tourist traffic and the large amount of money it is calculated to bring into the coffers of the country, those engaged in commercial and industrial undertakings will see what they can do to follow the lead of those -who are removing their advertising boards. If they do, some future I Governor-General may be. able to congratulate you on having a larger variety of scenic attractions than any country in the world and those not in any way I desecrated by the vandalism of man." This view was expressed by the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, in Christchurch, states the "Star," at the opening of the Canterbury Horticultural Society's show. His Excellency said that a number of firms had taken steps to remove hoardings where they were encroaching on the natural beauty spots of New Zealand, and it was his hope that others would follow the lead. "To those who are proud of the natural beauties of this country and wish to prevent them from the ruthless hand of vandals I would say a 'word," he said. "About eighteen months ago, at a show in Wellington, as the result of criticism from travellers from the Old Country, I ventured to ask publicly some of those who advertise motor spirits and motor oil in the beauty spots of New Zealand if they could see their way to desist from that way of advertising their wares. Within a week I had the delightful experience of the biggest user of hoardings of them all—the Shell Company of New Zealand, Limited—-consenting to remove their hoardings.
