THE POPULAR "LOVE APPLE."
Although tomatoes are exceedingly popular to-day, not many years ago they were cultivated purely for the ornamental value of their forbidden fruit. Tempted by their luscious appearance, courageous individuals tried eating these "love apples," as our grandmothers called them, and as they did not suffer any harmful effects their use because more general. There was a time when the tomato was held responsible for causing various diseases, particularly cancer. It has, though, been established that it is a good source of vitamins A and B, and an excellent source of C, promoting growth and development, furnishing resistance to scurvy, helping to maintain bodily condition and good teeth. Too long a period" of cooking or the addition of eoda will destroy the vitamins, so that both should be avoided to obtain the full food values. More tomatoes per head are eaten in the United States than in any other country. Italy, jauks-second. _ j ,
