CONFIDENCE IN TARANAKI
jM Confidence continues throughout the B stock market in 'J'aruiinki, unci in nuu.y I sections the demand exceeds the supply ~ Quotations <>l iu,u su«ep ami cattle are 0 very limited, and as coping with pasture J growth is the main thought with many at b the moment, the shortage of local quotak tions suitable for graziers suggests that the t adequate .stocking of their farms with any r particular class is going to be a problem. improvement is already noticeable in ■- values for boner cows, occasioned by com- | petition from would-be buyers of stationt bred cattle were they available, and at t .seems likely that many will look to this 1 source to satisfy their requirements. 3 Uairy Cattle. •i Uairy eattle continue to be keenly I sought, and a, further appreciation in ■ realisations has been noticeable during the i week, gsod quality cattle meeting a very . strong demand. J heir .scarcity has Occa- [ siojied some improvement in prices for t i medium sorts; in fact, the demand for all »I classes i.s much improved. Values in the ; I beet' section hold their ground, with per- ' I haps a slight improvement noticeable lor : well-bred prime cattle. .Most of the changs ing is, however, confined to paddock .sales, •and truck lots of young cowa and heifers ■ have been sold at. from .CO to .CO, while ■i the oddments of dairy soils submitted at auction change hands at from £3 to .CI . 10/> according- to finish. r\u Sheep Firm. Values in the fat sheep section are firm, but supplies oi wediers especially are not plentiful; Wethers sell at, from 22/0 u> • 2.">/, wliile ewes meet a ready sale at from 17/ to IS/0, with occasional lines exceeding the latter figure. Considerable interest is being displayed in the purchase of storo sheep on a forward delivery basis, but as yet Jittle business of much account with ewes has been completed. The sale of a lino of J 2OO black-faced lambs for January delivery has been made at 15/. Strong inquiry continues for ewes and lambs for I immediate delivery, but few lines are oii'er- ! ing, .sales during the week including a line ' of 500 4 and 0 tooth and 4-year-old ewes ■ and lambs at 27/; smaller lots of fuli- ■ mouth sheep changing hands at from 24/ ito 25/. Hoggets and store withers arc also in strong demand, but here again U\v are I offering, and outside the sina.l lots Unit come under the hammer little changing can be reported, lave hoggets sell at from 17/ to 20/ and wethers at 14/U to 10/0, but I no guide as to the strength of buyers of ■.'tore wethers tan be given, as practically ; no business with this class has been trans'acted. Store Cati;e Wanted. All classes arc popular in the store eattle section, cattle suitable for fattening being I perhaps the most popular, 'lucre is. however, quite a good demand for all female cattle suitable lor next season's dairy requirements, but no improvement in values is as yet noticeable as a result of the spring demand. Two-year empty Jersey ■ [heifers (good) make £3 to'£3 10/, other's 35/ to ,t2 5/, sound empty cows (best) to £2 V, others £L 12/,(i to CI 17/0, choice yearling .Jersey heifers £4, goud sorts £3 ' 7/6 to £3 12,0. smaller cattle displaying j quality £2 15/ to £3, well-mown crossbred ! tattle £2 7/0 to £2 12/(3, good quality hold-over heil'c-i's £2 2/G to £2 7/0, average j ;C1 15/, inferior and light-conditioned 20/ ' to 27/0. Only moderate yardings of dairy cattle < are being submitted, and eagerness" to buy is being shown at a!! centres, good quality cattle selling especially well. The depleted i condition of supplies suggests that higher levels will be attained before the season is far advanced. At the moment good quality 1 heifers sell at from £7 JO/ to .CS JO/, occasional choice animals exceeding the latter figure. Good sorts make -CO 5/ to £0 15/, average and smaller cattle £:7 7/(i [ to £5 15/, inferior and light-conditioned £4 to £4 15/. Dairy cows are also meeting a'better Idemand, genuine sorts selling under spirited competition at from £8 to £D. average cattle at £■> 10/ to £0 10/ and V inferior at £3 to £4.
