LIFE SENTENCE.
SEQUEL TO BONDI OUTRAGE. SYDNEY, September 6. In the- Sydney Criminal Court to-day Claude Wallace, aged 25, motor mechanic, and Eric Newlyn, aged 26, motor driver, were convicted of the manslaughter of Mr. John Rowland at Bondi. Both were sentenced to- imprisonment for life. Wallace's defence was that he did not know the revolver was loaded. Newlyn declared that he was, not aware Wallace possessed a revolver when the hold-up occurred.
Mr. John Rowland, a young indent agent, was shot at Bond! on May 15. At the subsequent inquest the coroner returned a verdict that death was caused by a bullet wound. He committed Claude YVallace for trial on a charge of murder. Also the coroner found that Eric Newlyn was present at the shooting, and aided and abetted the crime, and he committed him for trial also on a charge o£ murder. Newlyn declared thai Wallace had planned the hold-up, as he wanted money to buy something to eat. Mr. Rowland, he said,' attacked Wallace with a suitcase. Newlyn said he heard a revolver shot, and saw Mr. Rowland fall. He wanted to take him to hospital, but when he saw people coming he and Wallace decided to drive away in a car which they had stolen.
