STREET PARADE.
RELIEF DEMONSTRATORS. PROTEST AGAINST CONDITIONS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Jthis day. Dissatisfaction with relief pay conditions, and particularly with the allocation for the last stand-down week, has been voiced by Hikurangi's unemployed for some time, and reached its climax this morning, when 500 men paraded the streets in the business centre of the town. The men assembled adjacent to Mr. Lomas' etore, King Street, about 10 a.m. and marched in a body to the post office, where the postmaster and certifying officer, Mr. A. Walker, was interviewed. In response to requests made tc- him, Mr. Walker eaid he would make representations to Wellington. The demonstrators then proceeded down King Street, and, after asking business men for support, met the chairman of the local unemploynient committee, Mr. R. Nesbitt. Mr. Nesbitt also assured the deputation that lie would do all in his power to have the allocation raised. The men then returned up the town and a stop was made in front of every shop. It was stated that a parade will be held in Whangarei and Kamo tomorrow, andi means of transport were sought. The parade to-day was orderly. When the canvass was finished it was lunch time, and the men dispersed. A meeting of shopkeepers has been convened for this evening by Mr. C. B. Gager. Future developments largely depend on the outcome of this meeting.
