DAWN.
(By Bnth Dennis, Warkworth; age 13.) Above the low lines of purple misty hills, faintly visible beyond the slowly heaving grey expanse of water, there comes a glimmer —a ray of light breaking through the greyness. The light deepens, widene, grows till all the restless ocean deep is flecked with dazzling dancing sunbeams, while blue wavelets ripple and leap and, gurgling, lap thegolden sand. And all the east is one glorious splendour —a fairy arch of softest pink. Here a lake of exquisite blue adds enchantment to the glory, while yonder lofty mountain top ie veiled in trailing wisps of cloud. Now the rosy glow is shattered as boldly comes the fiery sphere peeping from behind the hillcrest, then rising slowly, slowly higher. Bluer than the boundless ocean seems the lucid dome above, and round the hilte still hangs a -ceil of rose-tinged white. Then comes a whir of fluttering wings', a dark form silhouetted against blue, poises, hovers, and with a long, harsh cry, swoops swiftly to the sea below. Day ie dawning in the east, and life stirs sl&wly from iU sleep.
