NOTES FROM MATAMATA
LUCESS TURNED OUT. GIGANTIC IN GOOD FETTLE. J. W. Cathro, who has been training at To Awamutu for several seasons, has leased the property at Matamata recently vacated by J. W. Anderton and is expected to enter his new quarters to-day. Cathro will have Emancipation, Sir Musk and Lia Fail, a _ maiden by Chief Ruler—Miss Sphinx, with him. Lia Fail ds the property of the Misses Corbett, who also race Emancipation. Mr. WV Casey, who formerly owned and trained Chief Lap and Last Lap, is now working on a four-year-old gelding by Potoa—Mountain Ore. This is a good type of a chestnut, but is as yet in the rough. Hβ will not be ready to race until after Christmas. Lucess and Last Lap have been turned out for a spell. The former will not be brought in again until the end of the year. Whistling Rufus is making good progress under R. Mateer and should soon repay the patience shown by the trainer. The Nigger Minstrel gelding had only two starts last season and his form was encouraging. First Dance, a three-year-old filly, owned and trained by R. J. Mateer, is coming to hand nicely and displays pace out of the ordinary over a couple of furlongs. She is the most forward of the local juveniles and will probably be nominated for October meetings. This filly is very well bred, being by Speardance—Marble Town, by Archiestown, and much is expected of her. Lady Lulu, who is forward in condition, has of late been showing signs of lameness. The trouble has not been located, consequently the chestnut mare has been eased in her work. Little has been done with Master Norval and he has put on a lot of condition. As he raced through the winter the let-up should do the llti'e fellow good, and he may be expected to come back +o his best in the late summer. Inc'denta.ly, W. J. McLean's gelding is still eligible for the hack class. Gigantic, who won aj his last start at Ellerslie, is moving along nicely and is in great condition for early spring racing. He is a game finisher, and one of the shorter cup races should not be beyond his compass. " «
