PROTEST ACTION.
A MAYOR WALKS OUT. NORTH SHORE WATER BOARD. "Aβ a protest against what he described as "Devonport's attempt to control the North Shore Water Board," Mr. J. Guiuiven, Mayor of Takapuna, walked out of yesterday's meeting of the board. The incident arose when Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, chairman, who is Mayor of Devonport, proposed to "give his casting vote concerning a report from the board's solicitor touching on legal aspects of the proposed acquisition by the board of borough pumping stations at Lake Pupuke. The Mayor of Birkenhead, Mr. G. Mills, was "unavoidably absent from the meeting, and Mr. J: Prickett, who represented him, had no voting power. Two members of the board were in favour of legal recommendations being given effect, and two preferred the matter to stand over until Mr. Mills was present. "If the chairman insists on giving his casting vote, I am going to leave the meeting," said Mr. Guiniveu. "That is my ultimatum. I will not tolerate- it." Mr. Little: That is not playing the game. .- - •— ■'■■ Mr. Guiniven: You people are only putting up a point to suit yourselves. Mr. Meikle: I don't think you should eay that. You are looking at it in the wrong light. Mr. Guiniven: Devonport never could play the game as far as the North Shore boroughs were concerned* After Mr. Guiniven had left, the chairman said that nothing discussed at the meeting justified Mr. Guiniveu's action. On Mr. Meikle'a suggestion, the matter was allowed to lapse/and. will be discussed at ihe next meeting of the board.
