Five young men were sent to prison to-day and in the case of a sixth the charges were adjourned for 12 months. The theft of £150 worth of jewellery from a house at Killinchy, 30 miles from Christchurch, was the basis of charges brought in the Police Court, and there were 39 charges in all, alleging burglary, theft and receiving stolen property. The youngest of the accused, whose name was suppressed, was charged with receiving only. He altered his plea to guilty, and the charges against him were adjourned for 12 months, and he was ordered to make restitution of £3 10/. Kenneth Joyce Murray, aged 20, pleaded guilty to 10 charges of the theft of goods and bicycles, and two charges of wilfully damaging slot telephones. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Murray and Albert Edward Johns, aged 22, were charged with breaking and entering the house of E. G. Kcrswell and committing theft. Murray was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, and Johns for trial. Charles Mitchell Newman, aged 22, pleaded guilty to two charges of the theft of goods and a bicycle, and not guilty of receiving. On the summary charges, accused were sentenced as follows: —Lester Irving and Percy Irving, one month's imprisonment; Newman, six months; Murray, six months; Johns, three months' imprisonment, to be followed by 18 months' reformative detention.
