FORTY-MILE LIMIT.
EXEMPTION ISSUE. PROTEST BY MOTOR UNION. HIGHWAY OFFICIALS' VIEW. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. ' Main Highways Board officials, commenting on the North Island Motor Union protest against the board's alleged refusal to approve of exemption from the 40-mile speed, limit, state that the granting of exemptions is purely within the power of the Minister of Transport, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates.
They agree that the position was more correctly put by Mr. W. A. O'Callaghan in his presidential address, where it. was stated that the board did not ask for the 40-mile limit.- When the question arose regarding the exemption of specific roads from the limit imposed in the regulations, the Highways Board was only in the same position as county councils, whose opinion was sought.
