BOXING.
SACRED HEART TOURNEY. aiAUXUCE McHUGH CHAMPION. MEMORIAL TO JACK MOLLOY. "What a great "house" there was at Road last night, despite bad -weather, to witness the annual boxmg ■championships of Sacred Heart College. .Action there was in plenty, and although -the standard was not quite up to that of last year (Pat Sheehan, the clever 1032 Taupo winner of the Molloy medal could :not box in a higher division owing to inidisposition) there were many fine contests. 2Tot only was the big crowd pleased with -the all-round standard o't the bouts, but ■what impressed everybody mast was the -very fine spirit of sportsmanship displayed 'both in victory and defeat.
In the principal event the finalists were eons of two well-known men, Maurice McHugh, of the chief detective of Auckland, and Frank Nelson, of the Samoan merchant. The latter was handicapped by a severe cold, but with full knowledge of ■the fnct that he was up against a better man, ho carried the war into the enemy s «amp, and with hie left planted many "blows on his opponent's face and head. 3lcHugh, displaying better ringcraft, took toll of the young Samoan in the second Tound, and soon after the third commenced -the referee stopped the fight. The winner, _ fine footballer like his father was, will no doubt make a name for himself as a boxer, too.
In the other most important match it -was appropriate that the Tom Molloy Memorial should have been won this year bv a son of one of the donors, Mr. J. 1. MMloy—the object of the medal being to commemorate the performance of the patter's brother in winning the lightweight title of the college when a student there. The humorous element in the evening's entertainment was supplied by the cruiser «emi-finalists and the "dreadnoughts. J. lie decision of a draw in the nine-year-old flutter was hailed with delight by the spectators, especially as a telegram from the parents of one of the brave little chaps to "punch his opponent hard acted like a palvanic shock to the other, and he "mixed it" in delightful fashion. The "house" points scored for the whole of the boxing contests (including preliminaries) were: Pompallier 73, Coolahan ob, Basil and Lenihan, 50 each. Officials: Referee, Mr. Frank Burns; timekeeper, Mr. T. Finer; announcer, Mr. W ln D tWdng the officials of the Northern Boxing Association for its continued interest in boxing at the college, Rev. Bro. Remigius, acting-director, stated this was the eighteenth year that the association had loaned gear and equipment and erected the ring. During the whole of that long period Messrs. Frank Bums and W Dei-van had always been with them as referee and announcer. Gratitude was Ilw expressed, to Mr. W. Harper and Ins band of assistants. Paying a tribute to tire fine work done by the instructor, Mr Henry Donovan, Bro. Remigius said he would like to see every boy take advantage of the facilities to become proficient in a Scer hi seH-respS te^.^oS ieldom meet with friendly " seconds or in replying S£jy<Tl &£?*£& s!*g years, together with those indispensable " Dropertiee," Messrs.
