CALLIOPE CLUB.

I On Saturday the Calliope I-Tarricr Club lipid its fourth annual championship and scaled handicap over a course of six miles and a quarter. After heavy rain tile c.mrsc was the heaviest ever experienced this scaI son, and a severe test was imposed on the 1 starters to complete the course. Starting from the Methodist Hall, Birkenhead, the j trail led tip Glenfield ltoad to the trig | station, then across rain-soaked country l for two miles to Sunnybrae Road. then over a further three-quarters of a mile of country and hack up Hillcrest Avenue and across country to Glenfield Road, hack to the starting point. The starters were :— >S. Andrews (the present champion), A. Clow. A. E. Clayton, A. G. Davidson, W. C. McCombie, A. G. Rowland, D. Smith, W. Charman, A. E. Davis, W. R. Armour, L. Lanigan and XI. Steele. Clayton jumped to the lead at the start, but was soon passed by Andrews, Smith and Davis. At the trig station Andrews had a ten yards' lead on Clayton, with McCombie, Smith and Davidson together, next. After two miles had been covered Andrews mistook the course and lost about 100 yards, leaving Davidson in front ! by 20 yards from Clayton, with McCombie and Smith next. With half the distance covered, Andrews had regained the lead from Clayton, with Clow working his way to the front. David- , son had dropped back behind McCombie [and Smith. Going up to the trig. Andrews, running strongly, led Clow by 200 yards, with Clayton 40 yards behind, followed by Davidson and McCombie. Andrews held his lead to win by about 350 yards from Clow, with Clayton lot) yards back. Detailed results are: — S. Andrews, 35.-17. 1 (a record) : A. Clow, 40.0. A. 10. Clavton. 40.20, 3: A. G.
