Empire Day this year was marked by the celebration in an unusual quarter, writes our London correspondent. The Junior Carlton unbent so far as to ask in addition to private guests a large party of journalists to lunch, in order to celebrate tlie day in a menu composed of 187 different foods from 45 different parts of tlie Empire. A very decorative accompaniment of this veritable tour de force was a globe made entirely of flowers in which differently coloured blooms were arranged as a map of the world, with the sea in blue livdrangeas, the Empire in red carnations, while the rest of the world was composed of white hydrangeas. It was a great gathering of 000, complete with tfic Archbishop of Canterbury. « * » • Mrs. Keady, of Wynyard Street, gave a dance for h?r daughter Moira at her residence on Monday evening. Palms and feathery greenery were tlie decorations chosen for the first annual communal ball held in the Inter-house Club Booms, Chancery Street, last evening, in aid of funds for tlie Auckland "Chevra Kadisha" and Benevolent Society. Special rooms, were arranged for bridge, mail jong, and vocal items. The societies that assisted in making the function a success were: The Beth Israel, Auckland Hebrew Congregation, Jewish Women's Benevolent Society, Auckland Zionist Society, Auckland Jewish Club, Auckland branch Union of Jewish Women of New Zealand, Auckland Jewish Girls' Society and the Auckland Judean Association. The Mount Albert Croquet Club held their fortnightly bridge and 500 afternoon in the bowling pavilion on Tuesday. The Ladies' Auxiliary of St. Andrew's Society held a successful At Home in tlio Penwomen's Club rooms yesterday afternoon, when a large gathering of Scottish members and friends were present, the attendance being a record for the auxiliary. An talk was given by Mr. J. Budge on Caithness. a noted fishing town on the Moray Firth, in the North of Scotland. A peculiarity of the district for n'any miles around is that there arc neither trees nor hills, and yet it is situated in the rough highlands of the north. A badge of the St. Andrew's Society was presented to Mr. Budge by the president, Mrs. Black, as a mark of appreciation. Items were rendered by Mrs Middleton and Miss Morrison. Votes ot thanks to the speaker and performeis were passed by Mrs.. Will and Mrs. D. McCronc. Afternoon tea was served by the committee, and the meeting closed with the singing of "Aukl Lang Syne.

A succcssful 500 evening was held in the St. Ignatius schoolroom, St. Helier's Bay, on Monday night, when about 00 people attended. Tlie prize winners were: Mesdames Matthews, Hirst, Morgan and Mr. J. Kerr. A dainty supper was served by Misses Corban and O. Ivrause.

The usual monthly meeting of tlie Auckland French Club was held on Monday, when Mr. P. S. Ardern presided. Prior to the commencement of the programme, the French Consul, Monsieur Edouard Joubert, on behalf of the French Government, presented decorations to Mr. P. S. Ardern and Madame Foley, the former being made Officier do l'lnstruction Publique and the latter Oflicier d'Academic. An excellent programme of musical and dramatic items had been arranged by Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Coldhani. French songs were rendered by Mrs. W. Meek, pianoforte solos by Mr. P. T. Stebbing, violin solos by Master J. P. Stuart, solo dance by Miss M. Brook, humorous readings by Mr. L. H. Thomass, and a humorous sketch entitled "Gascon et Brigette," by Miss Barr and Messrs. Carpenter and i)e Lanehc. Following an interval for supper, a comedy entitled "La Dame de Bronze et Le Monsieur do Cristal" was presented by the Mount Albert Grammar School French Club, parts being taken by Mr. and Mrs. (i. S. Coldhani, W. O. Broad, 1. J. Takle, A. D. Kuthe and W. H. Hedges.
