FREIGHT CONFERENCE. Deadlock Between Australian Owners and Shippers. DESPERATE SITUATION. [United I'. A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, .this day. The freight negotiations between shippers and shipowners have broken down completely. The shipowners, it is stated, offered certain reductions provided the meat exporters entered into an agreement at those rates for 12 months. Tho exporters ofi'ored to accept the proposed rates for three months, but this offer was refused. A meeting of the committee of the Meat Exporters' Association decided not to enter into an agreement with the shipowners unless further reductions were made ih freights.
The secretary of the association, Mr. Smith, pointed out that Australian meat exporters were at a decided disadvantage by way of freight charges in comparison with New Zeal ind exporters, the differences being 7/3 per ton for beef, and £1 2/10 per ton for mutton, £2 4/ for lamb, and £3 2/3 for veal and pork.
Tho "Daily Telegraph" says that shippers regard tho situation as desperate, and there is talk of asking Mr. S. M. Bruce to intervene with the principals of tho shipping lines in London.
