CHEAPER BREAD.
FOR RELIEF WORKERS. MASTER BAKERS' PROPOSAL LOAF AT 4.«,8 INSTEAD OF 6D. Details of a scheme to provide' relief workers with bread sit -n<l a loaf given by the secretary ot the Auckland .Master Bakers' Association, Mr. S. S. Green, "he executive of the association has empowered the secretary to proceed with the sthenic provided he can secure the necessary financial support. Should that support nc forthcoming, the association will distribute 720,000 loaves of bread to genuine relief workers in the next three or four months at a price which represents a 2> per cent reduction on the present standard price of bread, (id a loaf. The total price of 720.000 loaves at the ttandard price would bo £18,000, and the total reduction to relief workers would be £4,>00. The inauguration of the scheme depends whether that latter sum can be met. The association itself is willing to find £3000. It is looking for the remaining fl.jOO from other relief organisations of trade interests. The proposal is, if the money can be found, to sell to relief workers (id bread coupons for 4Ad. Thefie coupons would be honoured by any member of the Master Bakers' Association, and would he redeemable at their face value at the oliice of the association. Thus the relief worker would have,a wide range in his choice of bread. He could, in fact, buy any bread which he liked. ".I hat is the big thing about the scheme," said Mr. Green, "and the bread will lie delivered to the home of the worker at that price." As far as is possible it is intended that the existing organisations shall be the channels of distribution of bread coupons, provided 'satisfactory precautions are assured against over-lapping and abuse, and that only genuine relief workers benefit. "It should be a good scheme," commented Mr. Green, who has had experience ill relief orga' .sation. Last year he was organiser of relief operations in New Plymouth, and was founder of Welcome House.
