KAWARAU DAM.
GATES CLOSING ON" MONDAY, (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Friday. A director of the Amalgamated Kawarau Gold Mining Company {announced to-day that the company proposed to close the gates of the dam at Frankton on Monday in order to permit the company's engineers to make soundings of the depth of water coming from the Shotovcr and Arrow Rivers. This work is necessary in connection with plans for the new dam which is to be erected just below tlio junction of the Kawarau and Arrow Rivers. No indication could bo given of the period for which the gates will bo closed, and it is impossible to say whether the effect of the closing of the dam will be of much benefit to prospectors who have been waiting on the banks of the river for a fall which will enable them to reach gold.
