WITH THE AMATEURS. MANUKAU CLUB'S OPEN RACE. | FIXTURES. ( Saturday, Juno 24.—25-Mile Senior, 7iMile Junior. Sunday, June 23.—Mercer Run, Newmarket, i U a.m. I , Saturday, July I.—Centre 40-Mile Race, 2 p.m. I The first open road events to be con--1 ducted by the Manukau Amateur Cycling • Club were decided on Saturday and were well supported. Sixty-three riders started : in the races. Two Lynndale and two Auckland Club juniors started along with nine Manukau juniors in the five-miler for the young fry. Limit men. off 2.0, held sway and accounted for the three plaeings. The smallest of the Manukau juniors, H. K. Davies (2.0), won. He clocked the useful time of 10,12 and sprinted strongly to beat L. Morrison, of the Auckland Club. Davies won a 7%-miler off 5.30 last month. Eddie K. Hansen (scr) found in Roy Taylor (scr), of the Auckland Club, much too tough a proposition and had to be content with second fastest time in 15.3, which was good under the difficult conditions, owing to the strong, cold southerly gale. Fifty lined up for the senior 20-milcr over eight laps. Scratch men, Les. H. Dwight and Gordon Patrick, gave away starts up to 8.0. The two limit men, C. Bowden and J. Fanch, had almost completed a lap before the scratch men left. J. G. Morris (7.0) seemed to summon an unusual amount of speed in the finishing sprint to win from the Auckland Club riders, A. M. Keith and H. Webster. Morris, in company with seven others, shared the lead at the end of four laps, 10 miles, and remained there. Although a most consistent starter, Morris has only had two road wins. Last year lie won the Papatoetoe Club's open 31-mile race to Clevedon and back off 10.0. He is a powerful plugger and a fine club worker. The win should give him much encouragement. Les. H. Dwight (scr) gained time honours by outsprinting Gordon Patrick. Dwight's time was 56.52. Dwight is the first to score two fastest times in club races this year. Riders not familiar with the Kumeu course should attend the run leaving Western Springs next Sunday at 9 a.m., or the afternon run at 2. Manukau riders were hopelessly outclassed in the football match against the Lynndale Club, which won by 19 points to 9. However, the change of exercise did the riders no harm. The club is indebted to the Manukau Rugby Club for loan of club jerseys. A junior road race handicap of 7J miles and a senior race over 25 miles will be conducted by the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club on Saturday. The junior event will start at 2 o'clock. Mr. J. D. Auckram's handicaps are: — Junior.—E. li. Hansen, scr; L. C. Craddock, G. W. Holland, G. Leonard, 435; A. W. J. Brumby, J. F. Archer, 1.30: D. A. Parkinson, D. J. Richardson, H. J. Ball, H. R. Davies, 2.0; R. C. Chappell, 2.45. Senior.—L. H. Dwteht, K. G. Foubister, scr: J. Brown. S. .1. Baird, O. P. Clark, E. F. Raper, E. D. Andrews, 1.30; A. W. D. Robinson, F. R. Markham, J. R. Hall, N. Dilworth, 8.30. AUCKLAND AMATEURS. FIXTURES. Saturday, June 24.—20-Milc Handicap, Henderson-Kumeu. Saturday, July 15.—25-Mile Open Handicap. The Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club did not hold a race last Saturday, the club riders supporting the Manukau Club open 20-mile race, held on their usual course in Avondale South. This club has ever reason to be proud of the efforts of its members, for in the junior race the two starters claimed second place and fastest time, while the seniors' race saw eleven members start out of 50 riders, and the club plaeings were second, third, sixth and second fastest time. Gordon Patrick clocked second fastest time in 56.53. The finish of the race was downhill, and the extra weight of Les. Dwight played a big part in Gordon's defeat. Gordon is one of the fastest road sprinters in Auckland, but the momentum gained by Les. proved too much for him, although he was closing the gap at the finish. Next week's race starts from the junction of Lincoln Road and the Swanson Road and is over the same course as will be used in the next centre race. L. Moi-rison (2.0) showed much improved form to finish second. The training he receives at the gymnasium evidently is bearing fruit, and the next junior race should see him crossing the line first. Next Saturday the club will run a 25mile time trial, with a sealed handicap in conjunction. This will be four laps of their circuit at New Lynn. The riders draw for positions and start at half-minute intervals. I/XTOTDAUB AMATEURS. Last week the members of the Lynndale Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club sampled the Manukau course. The ten starters found the circuit in good order, but the strong head wind made the ride very strenuous. In the junior event E. McCurdy found it too much for him and withdrew after the first lap, while A. H. Davies was unlucky to strike chain trouble, which lost him valuable time. Only three finished out of the eight seniors who competed. In most cases it was a case of "getting tired." K. Hankin was the most successful; he gained fifth place. C. Johnson rode his usual steady race, to come in with the second big bunch. H. W. Smith, although well out of the picture, saw the distance through. A 25 miles time trial and sealed handicap will be held on Saturday by the Lynndale Amateur Cycling Club. Riders will draw for positions and start at intervals of 80 seconds over four laps of the New Lynn circuit. TAKAJPUNA AMATEUR CLUB. ■ The following are the handicaps declared . by Mr. Gallagher for the club's out and home race to Albany to-morrow: —B. Sharp, scr; A. Lydford, 1.0; W. Nash, S.
