COUNTRY HOCKEY WEEK.
WAIPA WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. KEEN FIGHT IN LADIES' CUP. PAEROA SHOULD MEET AUCKLAND. Yesterday afternoon's play in the Coun- , try Week hockey tournament at Keniucra . had an important bearing on the two I championships. \vaipa, in defeating . Whangarei, settled tlie issue in the Vv hite . ixurse v„up. Ji.v'ea u tne To Awauiutu I team were to lose its game witn Waiin una aii-eiiioon, it wouiu s.ill talce tne , tioiJliy iroiu the UuJ homer, liodiiey. , »uui jrVuciilanU, lue jrroviiiciai Cap cnanipioiis, ueat uie clever Collegiate gins, t tne congest in tne ladies' seetion re- . solved itseif into a final uctweeii Auckland A and j/aeroa, provided neither is i sensationally beaten 10-uay by iNortnern , wairoa or xtoduey. ' Beautiful weather drew a good attend- . ance of spectators, who were rewarded with a couiile of last games on grounds 1 winch had dried up wonderuiily alter ■ \\ ednesday's soaking ram. Cmei interest i mured in the \v aipa-Wnaiigarei engage- • incut, in which tlie new champions uiwuys • dominated play, except perhaps for ten • minutes in the closing stages of tne first spell. Waipa failed to score in this, priu- ■ cipuily through members of the eleven tending lo individual hockey instead of , combination. The Whangarei centre line . was not hitting so cleanly as in previous ' Mutters, and tne full-backs, Les Goodenough and Bill lvessell (captain), did nobly to keep the enemy out, until the red-and-whites rang on two quick goals early in the second spell. Wood and ' Gibson, the Southern insides, were going great guns at this stage; so was the , skipper, B. Spiers, at centre. Taking all . things into consideration, Whangarei did well to get out of it three goals down. J. ' Speirs (no relation to the family of crack ' players) was again a host in himself in his unaccustomed role af goalie. Auckland soon went to the attack against Collegiate, and although the ' younger girls often countered, their hockey lacked "ginger." The champions led I—o at the interval, and by superior combination and tactics had taken the score to 3—o before Collegiate made the ' finest movement of the tournament. It resulted in a slashing shot by K. Landers reaching the net, but she was penalised for "sticks," and her side never looked really dangerous again. M. Rossiter, at inside right for the winners, was the outstanding player on the field. Next to catch the eye was N. Maxwell for the Collegians, and this fine young hoekeyite played with exasperating luck. With a little more determination and finish she will surely develop into one of the finest players in the Auckland province. K. Landers nt inside left and the diminutive R. Hall at right-half al«o went well for the losers, for whom K. Lilley at fullback did well again. A word of praise is due to the younger team for its sportsmanship, for every time the Aucklanders found the net the Collegians clapped as heartily as though they had themselves scored. Vera Isaacs again was outstanding at centre-half, and her generalship and tactics had much to do with Auckland's victory. In addition to the fifth round to-day, a special match for the Kent Cup is being played between Piako (who competed at the 1932 tourney) and Whangarei. The carnival terminates to-morrow afternoon with the ladies' final and two Town v. 'litiy representative contests. Fourth round results were: — MEN'S GAMES. WHITE HORSE CUP. Waipa 3 (G. Wood 2, 13.
