DAMAGED DALCROY.

TEMPORARY REPAIRS ONLY,

INSPECTION IN DOCK.

Damage suffered by the British steamer Dalcrov when she ran ashore on a coral reef oft Dove Island, on her voyage from Java to Auckland recently, was revealed when the freighter mas docked at Devon port during the weekend. An inspection of the vessel in dock showed that the damage is forward, on the port side. For a distance of about 30 feet, starting at the stem, the lower plates are buckled, while about twenty frames, to which the plates are riveted, •are bent inward. The docking also showed that the plugs put into the rivet holes by Japanese pearl divers at Thursday Island are still in position. The vessel was inspected by surveyors yesterday. Only temporary repairs will be carried out at this port, the vessel being expected to sail for Australia, where she is to load wheat for Great Britain, about Thursday or Friday. Considering that the Dalcrov was steaming at about ten knots when she struck the reef, it is remarkable that she is not more seriously damaged. That she escaped as she did is regarded by engineers as a splendid advertisement for the quality of work put into the vessel by her builders.
