WAIHI EXPLOSION.

DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £105.

INJURED MEN RECOVERING

WAIHI, Saturday.

Reporting to the Wailii Borough Council on the recent explosion of gas in the meter house of the municipal gasworks, when two of the staff were severely injured, the manager, Mr. A. T. Harvey, stated that a good deal of damage was done to both plant and building. The insurance adjusters liad made a total assessment of £105 13/. The calorimeter was totally destroyed. It was understood that the State Insurance Oflice is meeting the claim. The building was now being reinstated at the price mentioned, and the plant, with the exception of the calorimeter, was being reconditioned at tlie works. The manager made special refcreuce to the action of the injured men, Messrs. C. Jamieson and P. Finncl, in helping during the fire which followed the explosion, up to the time of their removal to the hospital. Thanks were also due to other members of the staff, Messrs. McLeod, Birse, and Cornthwaite, for their efforts in keeping the town supplied with gas under the greatest difficulties. They were obliged to work in gas fumes, oir and on, for some hours. The two injured men are making good progress in the hospital, and Mr. Harvey, who was also injured, has continued work though unable to use his right arm. Sympathy with the injured men was expressed by the Mayor at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council, and appreciation of the efforts of other members of the staff under trying circumstnivcs.

The station meter is being sent to Wellington for testing and overhaul.
