SEMI-FINAL GALLOPS. biLly boy pleases. paddon also schools well. With the exception of a couple of light showers the weather was fine for the eemi-final gallops at Ellcrslie this morning, and a number of Great Northern candidates were seen in action. No. 1 grass track was open for fast Work, the poles being 10ft out from the rails, while hurdles were erected on the outside of the course proper. , The steeplechase course was also available, but it was not in much demand. The going was heavier than it has been previously this season. Among the hurdlers the most impressive efforts were those of Paddon, Principal and Billy Boy, while Make Up and Neil shaped well over the steeplechase fences on the flat. The best gallops were credited to Manawhenua, Taneriri, Miladi and Bronze Eagle, while Tarporley and Gibraltar also impressed. No. I Grass. Grand Spirit was the first to work, hitting out very freely, but she was not after time, taking 50 4-5s for her last half-mile. Court Haven and Teremai were sent together over five furlongs, Court Haven doing the distance in 1.7 3-5, Teremai being eased up at the top of the straight. Valroe finished in front of Imamint at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.22 1-5, the first three taking 41 2-ss. Notamint assisted them over the last halfmile, which she ran in 53 4-ss. One of the best efforts of the morning over six furlonjfs was • registered by Manawhenua and Taneriri, who both carried light weights. They ran the first throe furlonge in 58 1-js, and completed their task in 1.10 4-5. Manawhenua, who was on the outside, pleased most, though Taneriri's effort was distinctly good.

Zanc Grey did strong work over a round, running the distance comfortably iu 2.13, the last seven furlongs taking 1.47 3-5. Love Story ran home fvoni the tlireefurlong post in 40 3-ss, hitting out i"solutely. Supreme Ruler and Killing King, alter taking 15s for their first furlong, got 'to the oiid of five furlongs in 1.8 1-5, the former pleasing the better of the pair. Catoma was allotted a round, which iie covered in 1.59 1-5, the last six furlongs occupying 1.24, and the final halfmile bis. Ho handled the going well, and ifi in lirst-claes condition lor Jiis coming engagements. Over a similar distance Wee Pat and Patutahi took 2.10, the last halfmile being covered in 50 2-ss. They were both going comfortably at the linish. Sir Val was given an easy six furlongs, covering tlie distance in 1.26. The Cornwall Handicap candidates Tarporley, Gibraltar and King March were companions over a round, which took 1.58. The last seven furlongs occupied 1.35 2-5, and the final half-mile 54 3-ss. They were bunched at the finish, with Tarporley, who had the outside running, going the better of the trio. United was a couple of lengths in front of Searcher and Hawthorn, who were" on terms, after running five furlongs in 1.7 4-5. Hawthorn could have done much better. Neil worked' over a round, being eased up over the last few furlongs. He was not timed. Gay Marigold galloped freely over five furlongs, covering the distance in 1.7 3-5. .This filly looks in excellent condition. Miladi and Bronze Eagle, • who was brought over from Takanini, finished well ahead of Aiguille at the end of six furlongs in 1.19 3-5. They went fast over tha early stages, registering 37 3-5s for the first three furlongs. Miladi shaped well, though Bronze Eagie, who carried a light boy, was going comfortably beside her at the finish.

The jumpers Kinsei and Prince of Orange were associated over a round which occupied 2.2 3-5, the last six furlongs being covered in 1.28 1-5. They were about on terms at the finish, but were not doing their best. Landlubber easily accounted for Valsier, beating- • him by several lengths over six furlongs. He ran the first three in 30 4-ss, and the full distance in 1.22 1-5. Chief Cook sprinted but was not timed. King Comet was holding Escalus safely at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.26 3-5. Other horses to do useful tasks were Mahkill, Master Brierly, Caliente, Callamart, Omeo and King Win. The Jumpers. On the course proper Principal (McUroy), Paddon (Rennie), Landmark (Tucker), and ' Thespis" (Burgess) were companions in a school over four hurdles. After ' clearing; "the first . two fences Thespis- was steadied, Paddon'and Principal going on in front. They jumped the last two'fences together,, arid finished on terms. Thespis luaue a faulty jump at the third fence, and. swerved badly.. at the last, which he hit and. came to grief. Landmark jumped safely, but was very sote, finishing lengths behind the leaders. Paddon's effort was very encouraging, and is sure to bring him into favour for the Gireat -Northern Hurdle. Race. Principal also gave a fine exhibition. The time from hurdle to "hurdle was 1.22 4-5. Billy Boy (L. Dulieu) gave Solanio (Stanway) t and General Lu (Olive) about a hundred yards start in a' school over the same" fences, and jumping in great style led them over the ■ last obstacle. Solanio gave a good display, but General Lii did not impress. The time was 1.25 3-5, but Billy Boy's time would be nearly three seconds- faster. Standfast (L. Dulieu), Carlaris (F. Thompson) anil Bicolour (Tucker) started off over a round of the steeplechase fences, Bicolour, after jumping four fences on the fiat, being pulled off. Standfast and Carlaris continued on over the hill, tlie lastnamed "oeing pulled off after jumping the stonewall at the foot of the hill. Standfast completed-the round alone, giving -an improved display. Make Up (Rennie) and Xeil (Tucker) wei-e associated over ' the steeplechase fences on the flat, which they negotiated safeiy. Neil gate a good display. Make Up also fenced well, though he got in, rather close to the first fence of the double.

' ARRIVALS. Recent arrivals are: King Win, Autumn Dawn, Ganpat, Full Mark, Omeo, Beacon Fire, Pango, Callamart and Acervate. Callamai't -trotted once round on the eand, and ran home over three furlongs on Nol 1 grass in 425. He is looking exceptionally, well. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. 'Additional riding engagements are:—S.
