SUMMER.

So many things have been said about summer. Summer's a fairy and summer's a jade. Theme l'or a chap-book or grist for a mummer Storming a barn, or a song for a maid. How shall 1 write of the summers I've known ? How shall I wrile of the birds that have flown Past my shut latticc, all thrilled on a quest How shall I write of their happy unrest? Whom do I house but (lie ghosts of desire? Come you and sit with mc here by the tire, Little old men that were there at my birth. Let us have ribaldry, let us have mirth. There is a thing that we dare not appraise. It is the tally of dead summer days. Come, little white-beards, and watch me grow old. Shiver my timbers! This summer is cold. —C. R. ALLEN. Duncdin. '
