WITHOUT A CREW.
HOLMGLEN'S PASSAGE. SHIPPING STRIKE INCIDENT. MASTER FINED £5. (By Telegraph.-—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Captain Mead, master of the vessel Holmglen, was prosecuted to-day by the Marine Department as a consequence of the vessel's arrival at Wellington recently without a crew. Captain Hall, of the Marine Department, said the case arose as a result of the recent shipping trouble. The crew refused to go to sea at the time the vessel was to have sailed from Lyttelton, and the master decided to sail without them. Owing to the peculiar circumstances prevailing at the time and the fact that the master already hat. given a written explanation, the Department instructed him not to press for a heavy penalty. Defendant told the magistrate, Mr. E. Page, S.M., that he had to act hurriedly. The crew gave no intimation during the day that they lid not intend to sail, and urgent cargo was on board, so he decided he had a duty to the owners to get it to Wellington. The magistrate imposed a fine of £5.
