WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB.

BIRKBECK'S STEEPLECHASE. HURDLES TO HIGH FALUTIN'. VIEW HALLOO BEATS CHOPIN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WANGANUI, Thursday. The weather was perfect for the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's winter meeting, and the attendance was very satisfactory. The track was rather holding after the soaking rain of the previous day, but the game was ideal for jumping events. Consent appeared to have the Century Hurdles won, but his rider was evidently surprised by High Falutin' coming up on the inside. I 1". McHugh, the rider of Consent, was fined £10 for carlessness. During the day the sum of £8616 was put through the totalisator, compared with £5896 for the first day of the previous winter meeting, an increase of £2720. A Favourite Beaten. There were nine runners in the Rata Hack Handicap, Pango being the first choice of backers, with Ida Merling next in request. From an even start, Arastar ran into the lead, and showed the way down the back to Ida Merling, Nebulae, Plateau and Pango. The order was much the same as they crossed the top. Entering the straight Ida Merling was alongside Arastar, with Pango and Plateau close up. In the run home Ida Merling drew clear, and she finished strongly two lengths ahead of Pango, the latter beating Arastar by a similar margin. Plateau was fourth, and then came Thrasher raid Lalla Quex. Wins Well. Of the nine starters in the Balgownie Hack Handicap, Fairway was the popular pick. The early running was made by Priscilla Verne, but as they turned into the back stretch Beaconsfield was up with her, and then came Davistock and Tentcall, Fairway being last. As they crossed the top Attentive took charge from Beaconsfield, and they were together entering the straight, with Davistock close up, and then came Grand Lahu and Fairway. At the distance Davistock was in front, and he got home by a neck from Fairway, who came with a great run, to beat Attentive out of second money by a length and a half. Beaconsfield was fourth and Grand Lahu next. Fairway was last in the early stages.

Consent Unlucky. For the Century Hurdles, Consent and Callamart were most in request. Consent went into the lead from the jump-off, and when they had settled down lie had Adventus, Red Bank, Callamart and luvictus as his nearest attendants. Consent quickly opened up a good lead, and was clear as they ran through the straight from Adventus, with Red Bank and High Falutin' together next, and then caine Henry of Navarre and Callamart. Going down the back Consent was still foicing the pace from Adventus and High Falutin', and as they turned for home the order of the leaders was much the same, with Ruanui coining fast from well back. Consent led over the last hurdle, and looked to have the race in safe keeping, when High Falutin' Came with a fast run on the inner, and beat Consent by a neck, with Henry of Navarre three lengths away, third. Then came Callamart and Ruanui, with Miss Hastings next. F. McHugh, rider of Consent, was fined £10 for careless riding. Scored Very Easily. Eleven saddled up for the Empire Handicap, Aga Khan and View Halloo being the chief fancies. Beacon Fire and Princess Bell led past the stands from Arisus, but Chopin was in front entering the back stretch, and was followed by Princess Bell, View Halloo, Beacon Fire and Aga Khan. As they crossed the top Chopin still held command from View Halloo, who was going well within himself, and then came Aga Khan and Beacon Fire. This was the order of the leaders into the straight. Once headed for Home View Halloo took charge and won very easily from Chopin by three lengths, with Beacon Fire a length away third, and then came Aga Khan, Princess Bell and Awaken. A Small Field. The scratching of Omeo left only five to contest the Grandstand Steeplechase. Fine Acre was a good favourite, and he led the field the first time round, and as they went past the stands he had Jen and Birkbeck as his nearest attendants. A. McDonald, on Birkbeck, was covering much less ground than the others, and lie had his mount up with Fine Acre going down the back. Birkbeck took the lead at the turn, and jumping the last obstacle in good style, had no difficulty in -winning by three lengths, from Fine Acre, who beat Acervate by a head. Day Lass was last. The jumping was excellent all round.

Kaihoro Disappoints. All Humbug and Sir Pombal were taken out of the Winter Oats, leaving nine to saddle up. Kaihoro wa6 first choice. Pomp was first to show out from The Tiger, but the latter was soon in front, and he led across the top from Kaihoro, Pomp, Knollmere and Arvada. Entering the straight Pomp was second to The Tiger, with Kaihoro, Knollmere and Arvada handy. The Tiger never gave anything a chance in the run home, winning by a length and a half from Royal Bengal, who beat Knollmere by half a length. Then came Pomp, Former and Curie, with Kaihoro last. Good Hunting Nicely. The concluding event was run in gathering darkness. Arena was chief fancy, but the winner turned up in Good Hunting. Arena was the early leader, but Good Hunting was in charge crossing the top from Diagano ana Arena. They were the leaders into the straight, and Good Huntin!?' went on to win by a length from King Thomond, who came fast on the inner and beat Arena by half a head for second place. Chief Marionette was fourth. Later results are:— CENTURY HURDLER of 175sovs. One mile and three-quarters. 5 —4—HIGH FALUTIN' b g. aged, by Grandcourt—Table Talk (Mr. R. Grace), 10.2 —A.
