CARNEGIE FELLOWSHIP.
KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS. Applications closed yesterday in Auckland for the Carnegie Fellowship, valued at 2500 dollars ( £500 at par) which is granted to a woman kindergarten teacher trained in New Zealand, to enable her to study kindergarten teaching methods and subjects abroad. Four applications have been received by the secrc'.ary of the Auckland Kindergarten Association, Mr. G. O'Halloran. Mr. O'Halloran said this morning that the representative of the Carnegie Trust had made it understood that the fellowships were to be granted for only two years. A communication from the president of the University of Minnesota in May of last year was to the effect that the Free Kindergarten Association in New Zealand might he in a position to send sorrm promising young student to the United States for advanced training in kindergarten work. The New Zealand Kindergarten Union decided to take advantage of the offer of the fellowship, with the result that each of the main centres throughout the Dominion sent in a nominee. Miss Scott, of Wellington, was the selected applicant last year. All nominations have to be in Dunedin by June 1. Applicants are required to hold a New Zealand Kindergarten diploma and to possess outstanding teaching ability and personality. The successful applicant is required to return to New Zealand to teach for at least one year after the expiration of the fellowship. She is also required to be New Zealand born or resident in New Zealand for at least three years.
