BUTTER QUOTAS.
' 1 feel that the Dairy Board is taking np en extraordinary stand, on the question of some form of regulation of butter exporis. In this.most important and vital matter, the Dairy Board has been uncompromising, hostile and stubbornly dogmatic, and has raised quite objectionable criticism without a single constructive thought. When the question of butter export regulations became of immediate importance, the New Zealand Exporters' Association received some very important cables from the Importers' Association of Great Britain. These cables, together with the- position of the market, revealed quite clearly that something must be done without delay. The Exporters' Association then made a public announcement and among other things it was suggested that: "The decision, of the Dairy Board not to impose regulations should be reconsidered"; and some very thoughtful and constructive reasons were given, and suggestions advanced. When these views were submitted to Mr. T. C. Brash, secretary of the Dairy Board, it is reported that he accused the British, importers and distributers of 'an attempt to "stampede" the producers 'of NewZealand into ■»■" move which, by deduction, must ibe against their interests. More recently, when our Minister of Finance issued a carefully prepared and instructive pamphlet, dealing with various phases of the question, Mr. Dynes i'ulton is reported to have expressed his very great surprise at this action. Mr. Coatee, with his practical first-hand knowledge, hie experience at Ottawa and his sources of information from high ' British authorities, is undoubtedly the soundest authority on. the matter of butter export in New Zealand to-day, and Ms treatise is the first constructive effort published, giving a lead ate to the importance of this problem from a domestic and Imperial view. Meanwhile, the position of the 60,000 odd , dairy fanners and their families has grown steadily worse. Our butter export position must Ibe saved. DAIRY FARMER.
