PRISON ESCAPEE.
ARRESTED IN AUCKLAND. SMART DETECTIVE WORK. One of the three prisoners who escaped from the Rangipo Prison Camp, near JTaupo, on April 21, Basil Hodgson, aged 25, was recaptured early yesterday afternoon in Federal Street by Detective Davis. Vincent Barney Reardon, aged SO, and Eugene Charles Dominic McCarthy, aged 25, made their dash for liberty at the same time, Reardon was caught two days afterwards, but McCarthy travelled as far as Wellington, where he gave himself up at Mount jDrawford Gaol a week later.
Hodgson struck north and it is believed that he reached Auckland last Friday morning. About 6 o'clock on Friday evening a young man, whose description fitted that of Hodgson,.was caught in the home of Mrs. W. Noonan, of Lochiel Road, Remuera, by her son. He escaped and disappeared down Lochiel Eoad in the direction of Green Lane. The police immediately suspected Hodgson and special provision was made for detectives to endeavour to round hiin up during the week-end. On Friday night and again on Saturday all parts of the city and suburbs were patrolled by detectives, but Hodgson was not seen until Detective Davis saw him in Federal Street yesterday afternoon. It is coneidercd that the promptness of his re-! capture reflects credit upon the detective staff, particularly Detective Davis. This morning Hodgson appeared in the [Police Court before Mr. W. R. McKean, JB.M., on a charge of escaping from ißangipo Prison while lawfully confined there. On the application of Delectivepiergeant McHugh, Hodgson was refcpanded until May 23. , .
