HIDES FOR CANADA.
REDUCTION IN FREIGHTS. Following: representations made by tho Minister of Industriee and Commerce, the Hon. R. Masters, the Overseas Shipowners' Committee has decided to make a reduction for at least six months in the freight charges for hides and skins to Canada. The now rate will be the same as that to Britain. TRADE WITH THE EAST. AUSTRALIA'S GROWING EXPORTS. Reference to Australia's growing trade with China and Japan was made by Mr. Harold Nelson, chairman of the Bank of Australasia, in his speech at the annual meeting in London. Mr. Nelson said tho nearer market of the East had provided a very helpful outlet for Australia's products, as was shown by the following figures:— 1929-30. 1930-31 1931-32. Australia's £ £ £ exports to Japan .. . 6,555,003 9,500,499 11,659,012 Australia's \ exports to / China ... 273,507 3,336,113 4,832,167 "In the of Japan this results in an improvement for 1931-32 over 1929-30 of £5,104.009, and in that of China £4,558,660. This is, of course, accountable to the large increase in the purchase of wool by these countries and also of wheat. As you may be aware the East is becoming increasingly Westernised with regard to clothing, and moro so in the consumption of wheat in the shape of flour, macaroni, etc., in preference to rice. There is little to remark upon with regard to changes in the figures of the other Eastern countries, but. with imports totalling £9,037,179, Australia's trade with Eastern countries in 1931-32 resulted in a favourable balance of £12.178,942. In the previous year the favourable balance was £7,410,127, whereas for W29-30 there was an adverse balance of £1,668,938."
