OVERSEAS CLUB.

An "At Home" was given on Wednesday by the Overseas Club for Miss Nclle Scanlan, at which Miss A. R. Quayle presided. Miss N. Montgomery received the guests. Miss Scanlan spoke about the pageantry of England. Miss Scanlan dealt first with the features of historic interest centring round that part of London where the headquarters of the league is situated, St. James' Street, with the adjacent Mall and the environs of Buckingham Palace. Many interesting and amusing incidents relating to the Courts, the Royal Garden Party and the Lord Mayor's Show were described by the speaker.

Passing on to the more serious side of London life, Miss Scanlan paid tribute to the wonderful steadfastness of the people of Great Britain during the financial crisis, particularly during the first shock of the abandonment of the gold standard. Notwithstanding the fact that income tax amounted to 5/ in the pound, thero had been no resentment shown to the demand that three-quarters of this tax should be paid in advance. Bather peoplo had vied with each other to bo first to pay their dues, and so support the country in ite hour of trouble. Here she ventured to remind New Zealandere that a less pessimistic tone in describing their own financial problems would bo to the ultimate benefit of the country. Notwithstanding the reduced incomes which were now genera], this was still the most prosperous of the many countries she had visited.
