RATES UNCHANGED.

ONE . TREE HIX.lt BOROUGH. Estimates of receipts and payments, together Jwith proposed rates for the new financial year, were considered by the One Tree Hill Boronih Council last evening, It was decided that the rates should remain at the same level as last year, when the average total rate over thc whole borough was 3/, less 2J per cent for prompt payment.

It was stated in a report prepared by the Mayor, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, and the town clerk, Mr. A. Leesc, that the total estimated receipts for the year amounted to £33,587, as against £34,410 last year. Payments would reach £33,034, as compared with last years total of £33,241. Provision had been made to reduce the debits in the various interest accounts, and, on the figures submitted, the final balance of all accounts would show an improvement of £553. It was regretted that it had been found impossible to continue the steady reduction of rates of the past four years, but the adverse exchange rate, coupled with the necessity for undertaking permanent improvements from revenue funds, prevented any further reduction at the present time. As a matter of fact, the general rate had been reduced by Id, but the benefit had been absorbed by increased expenditure over which the council had no direct control. Mr. (jloldstine said that, providing receipts came up to expectations, and no further unexpected calls were received, tho council would be able to make a further reduction in the rates next year. After the estimates had been adopted Mr. W. G. Mulliolland said that the council and ratepayers generally owed a debt to the Mayor and town clerk for the fact that 'the estimates had been tabled and dealt with at the first meeting of the year.
