MONEY FROM TAX FUND.
"A DANGEROUS PRECEDENT." "The chamber should protest against the action of taking money from a specific taxation fund for the purpose of buying boots. It is a dangerous precedent, and may be extended to clothing and other articles," said Mr. J. Hislop at the meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce this morning. A protest against the proposal was received from a local retail firm. Mr. Hislop added that the unemployment fund was for the specific purpose of providing wages for those out of employment. Other members said the proposal would have a detrimental effect on retail business. "No doubt the Minister is actuated by a desire to help the unemployed obtain boots at the cheapest price, but we should pdint out the economic complications which will result," said Mr. A. G. Lunn. i It was decided to refer the matter to the executive to frame a reply to the retailer.
