BIG TROTTING DEAL.

One of the biggest deals in trotting stock America has yet experienced was recently finalised. Upon the death of millionaire W. H. L. McCourtie the whole of his famous stud was purchased by H. H. Knight, of Chicago. The price paid must have been prodigious. The purchase consists of 16 head, including the champion trotting sire Mr. McElwyn (1.5914), leading son of the famous sire Guy. Axworthy, whose stud fee was £400 per mare. The renowned producing mare Widow Maggie was not included in the sale, but will remain the property of the McCourtie family, to be pensioned off. Mr. McElwyn'e record of 1.59%, put up as a four-year-old, was also the best record of a living stallion at the time it was made. Another of the draft, Benelwyn, as a four-year-old did 2.1 'A in a race, which was also the fastest for a stallion in a race when made. Outside Mr. McElwyn the most valuable horse in the lot is Spencer McElwyn (2.4%) as a two-year-old. He was the leading two-year-old trotter last season, and is one of the first choices for this year's Kentucky Futurity, Hambletonian Stake and Futurities. It may well be imagined this po'fc alone would be worth.
