W.E.A. IN COUNTRY.
EDUCATION BY DISCUSSION.
Those acquainted with the work of j the W.E.A. in Auckland city are pro- : bably not aware of the extent to which its activities have spread over the coun- j try districts. So great has this tendency j been in recent years that the great bulk of the work done in the W.E.A. office is now concerned with the organising of courses for country groups. By means of the box and correspondence schemes, materials for the study of music, art, the drama and economic and social questions are supplied in about 20 weekly boxes containing lecture notes, pictures, gramophone records, etc. Groups or- j ganise themselves under a leader who is responsible to the W.E.A. for regular courses of study being carried out, and this throwing of responsibility on to the group leaders and members themselves j has the advantage of stimulating keenness and initiative. j In the Auckland Province alone there i are already 44 groups taking the various box and correspondence schemes, and these range all over the province from Kaitaia to Taumarunui, and from Raglan i to Whakatane. A wide variety of talks is now broadcast by the W.E.A. each week from the four YA stations. In connection with these, special arrangements are being made for the formation of listening and discussion groups.
