ANGRY TEACHERS.
Long-Simmering Resentment Ends in Open Revolt. RIOTING- IN CHICAGO. CHICAGO, April 27. The long-smouldering resentment within the ranks of Chicago's unpaid school teachers broke into open riot yesterday. About 3000 teachers, taking advantage of the spring vacation, stormed a down-town bank. They were repulsed by the police, who utilised fists and batons freely and inflicted several minor injuries. A number of women teachers fainted. A large plate-glass window in the bank was demolished. Later in the day attempts were made to enter other banks. Finally the demonstrators concentrated outside the meeting places of the City Council and Board of Education. Both meetings were guarded by large forces of policemen. For the past two years irregular pay has steadily increased and the total owed to teachers now is about 30,000,000 dollars. Last Monday teachers entered five down-town banks and insisted that the institutions should advance the City Council money on tax anticipation warrants. Yesterday when they found these banks heavily guarded they moved on to the Chicago Title and Trust Company. As part of its receivership business this institution holds a large amount of money for the . payment of taxes. Insistence by the officials that they had no authority to release these funds was met by jeers. Thereupon the police acted. Throughout the day contingents of teachers paraded the streets of the city singing patriotic songs and chanting slogans such as: "Give us this day our daily bread," and "Pay your taxes." Unless the unpaid taxes, or other moneys, are soon forthcoming it is likely that the schools will be closed from early in May to October.
