COAL DISPUTE.
OWNERS CONFERRING.
MINERS AWAIT DECISION.
HOPING FOR SETTLEMENT.
Under the auspices of the Northern New Zealand Coal Mine Owners' Association, a conference was held in Auckland to-day of representatives of the companies concerned in the present coal "war." The meeting, which was held in the offices of the Takapuna Jockey Club, was attended by. representatives of the Renown, Pukemiro, Glen Afton, Taupiri and Hikurangi companies. Colonel W. D. Holgate,. president of the association, presided, and also in attendance was Mr. T. O. Bishop, secretary of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners' Association. The official notice convening the conference stated that the business of the meeting.was to "consider the coal strike now in existence with some of the mines in the Waikato." At the luncheon adjournment Colonel Holgate stated that no statement as to the outcome of the deliberations up to that stage was available for the Press. It was expected that the meeting would last late into the afternoon. The "Star's" Huntly correspondent says meetings. of miners were held at Rotowaro, Glen Afton, Renown and Huntly' yesterday, and the men decided to await the' result of "the conference between the owners in Auckland to-day. The miners are quite determined to remain -idle until a settlement between the owners is reached. They are pleased that a, conference has been arranged, and hope for a. sneedy settlement.
