ANNIVERSARY AT SEA.
GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATED.
PARTY ON WANGANELLA.
Fifty candles on a huge cake burned brightly on the captain's table on the Wanganella at dinner on Tuesday, in celebration of the golden wedding of Colonel G. B. Appleton and Mrs. Appleton, of Melbourne, who are returning to Australia with the ship. Colonel Apple - ton, of the Victorian Volunteer Artillery, is a brother of the late managing director of the Huddart-Parker Company.
"Australia has definitely turned the corner. There is a better tone all round," said Colonel Appleton. "Her position to-day is the result of the splendid work of the Commonwealth and State Governments. There is much more confidence among commercial people. There was a splendid wool season, thanks to the Japanese, who were large buyers. All Commonwealth stocks are above par."
Colonel Appleton said the question for the Commonwealth Government at the moment Avas what they were going to do with the unemployed. The total had fallen considerably, but there were still thousands to be considered. There was a proposal to put most of them on the land, chiefly on forestry work, and put many young fellows on various stations and farms. It seemed to be a good idea.
